Item is a copy of a speech given by the Reverend Francis James Grimke on May 3, 1903 at the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. The day had been set aside as a "day of fasting, prayer and humiliation for the Colored people throughout the United States." Grimke framed his speech as a response to a circular published by the Colored Minister's Baptist Conference of Greater New York.
