Image description: Hamlet Evaluation System map of Vietnam, compiled on December 31st, 1967, and sent to Senator Joseph Clark on January 22nd, 1968. The Hamlet Evaluation System was developed by the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) to graphically represent the level of control the Viet Cong had in individual hamlets throughout Vietnam. Blue letters A-C represent hamlets where the US military exerts most control; green letters D-E represent definitely contested areas; the red Vs represent areas in which the Viet Cong is in control.

HES maps were developed monthly and quarterly throughout the US military conflict in Vietnam.
