October 1827 essay written by David Coles Senior, describing the reasoning and circumstances around his descision to emancipate the enslaved people he had inherited from his father. Because slaves freed in Virginia (the location of the Coles family farm) were not allowed to stay in-state, Coles moved with his newly-freed slaves to Illinois, a where he soon after ran for governer, on an anti-slavery platform.
