Image Description:
Images of the 1938 and 1944 garbage collectors strikes in Philadelphia. Image 1, from the 1938 strike, shows three men holding signs that read "Municipal Workers Union protesting against the layoff of 264 men and wage cut of 31%. Taxpayers, help us win." Image 2 shows William J. McEntee, business agent of AFSCME Local 427 discussing going back to work with a group of strikers, from the 1944 strike. Image 3 shows trash cans stacked outside an apartment building on 48th street during the 1938 strike.
