This presidential race taken place in 1856 illustrates a failing Democratic attempt as candidates James Buchanan and John Breckinridge have crashed into the "Slavery Plank."  A black man stands above and mocks James Buchanan's remark by correcting him and recalling that it is the "Democratic Platform" that he has crashed his buck into.  Tailing behind is American party candidate Millard Fillmore and Andrew Jackson as Millard yells, "I'm "All right on the Goose," as spectators point and laugh behind the lines. The Republican candidate John Fremont whose horse takes the lead is moments away from completing the great race.

A lithograph by John L. Magee.  An animated scene ridiculing the Democratic and American party candidates.
