In this hand-colored political cartoon, printed during the War of 1812, Columbia, personifying the United States, lectures John Bull, symbolic representation of Great Britain, and Napoleon Bonaparte (whom she calls "Mounseer Beau Napperty") on free trade and seaman's rights. Bonaparte stands on a small hill in the middle. Columbia, standing at left, carries a pole topped by a liberty cap and has a shield bearing the stars and stripes of the United States and an American bald eagle behind her. At right, John Bull says he doesn't like Columbia's lesson and prefers to read his own book, which contains the message "Power Constitutes Right."
