This portrait of Alexander James Dallas (1759-1817 ) is a print based on an engraving, which itself was made after an oil painting by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). Like the publisher, the engraving firm of Charles Goodman and Robert Piggot also operated in Philadelphia (until 1822). Stuart's portrait of Dallas was painted circa 1800 and is in the colleciton of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This print was published a year after Dallas's death. His prominence came not only from the successful legal practice he established in Philadelphia, but also for his appointement to offices on the state and federal level. Specifically, he served as secretary of Pennsylvania and then by appointment of President James Madison, as secretary of the treasury and, for a brief period, acting secretary of war.Inscription:
