Philadelphia saw a significant increase in the number of people that registered to vote in the mayoral election of 1935. Since the Great Depression, a major shift in political party affiliation was underway, and political tensions were high. The number of voters registered with the Republican party, totaling 503,568, went up by 30,149, while the number of people registered to vote Democrat, 299,262, increased by 35,439. On the ballot for the Democratic party was John B. 'Handsome Jack' Kelly, but his Republican opponent, Samuel Davis Wilson ended up winning the election.
