Image Description:
This online record contains four selected images from the Roman Catholic Society of St. Joseph book of indentures. The images depict the front cover, identures No. 3 and 4, and the back cover. The book was kept by the Roman Catholic Society of Saint Joseph, for Educating and Maintaining Poor Orphan Children. Indenture No. 3 recorded that John Duffeey was assigned an indentured apprentice, John McGangy, who would serve him for "nine years five months and eight days."  The indenture stipulate's Duffeey's obligations to McGangy such as, "sufficient meat, drink, and apparel..." and his education as an apprenticed cordwainer. The identure was signed with the consent of the board of managers of the "Roman Catholic Society of St. Joseph, for Educating and Maintaining poor Orphan Children." Given this information, it is likely that John McGangy was an orphan and John Duffeey was charged with a form of guardianship.
