Photograph from the Philadelphia Record (daily newspaper) photograph morgue. This image appeared in print August 2, 1944 during the Philadelphia Traction Company strike. This wildcat strike was a reaction to the company's recent hiring of African-American transportation workers.
Inscription:
"Jack Snyder, Record Photographer, snapped this picture just as striking PTC workers shouted down Anthony Gallagher (back to camera), CIO organizer, who appealed to them to return to work. The picture won first prize for news pictures in the big cities' division of the fourth annual Pennsylvania Associated Press News Photo Contest at Harrisburg. Jack won the same award last year with his pitcure of the DUKE OF WINDSOR holding a handful of asparagus during a visit to Seabrook Farms, Bridgeton, N.J." (reverse, near bottom)
