Photographs of the home of Samuel Powel (1738-1793), who served as Mayor of Philadelphia from 1775-76 and 1789-90.  Located at 224 South 3rd Street, the house was built in 1765 by Charles Stedman and Powel later added particular embellishments, including carved woodwork and ornate plaster ceilings.  George and Martha Washington notably resided next door to Powel's residence from November 1781 to March 1782 before residing in the President's House at 5th and Market Streets during Washington's presidency.
