Permanent ID:

Date:
1893
Image Description:
The house pictured was the home of Philadelphia Quaker and farmer John Bartram (1699-1777). Known as "the father of American Botany," he had little formal education, but was interested in growing plants. Bartram collected seeds and specimens of American plants and shared them with other naturalists. He communicated extensively with Peter Collinson, a London naturalist, and was well-known by other Europeans.

Bartram bought a farm on the west side of the Schuylkill River in Kingsessing in 1728. The original part of the house pictured on the front was completed in 1731. This image is taken from an invitation to the Bartram Family Reunion on June 8, 1893. Today, John Bartram’s house and farm are open for tours as Bartram’s Garden.
