Photographic copy of one portion of artist Paul Philippoteaux's famed cyclorama "Battle of Gettysburg" depicting fighting by the stone wall on the third day of battle. For generations of Americans, large-scale paintings known as cycloramas were popular attractions for which viewers often paid admission to see artistic renderings of epic historical events. In the late 1880s, French artist Paul Philippoteux created the "Battle of Gettysburg" cyclorama, a massive painting based on interviews with veterans and tours of the battlefield. The painting took Philippoteux and his assistants more than a year to complete and measured over 300 feet in circumfrence.
