This sketchbook holds some of the earliest works by Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), who established himself as an illustrator, as well as a lithographer and engraver. While only fourteen drawings are shown here, Pennell filled twenty-nine pages primarily with images of men at work along the docks of Philadelphia. Rustic homes along the river or in Fairmount Park are also depicted. Pencil studies and one finished pen work are on the verso of several pages. Pennell identified every view and the date he created each drawing. Titles (and corresponding page numbers) shown here are: 1. From Willow St. South; 2. At Race St.; 3. Among the Oyster Boats; 4.
