Image Description:
Amateur artist David J. Kennedy (1816/17-1898) painted this watercolor. Highland Mary refers to Mary Campbell (1763-1786), whose brief love affair with Robert Burns (1759-1796) inspired the Scottish lyricist and poet to create some of his most famous poetry and song. She died at the age of 23, most likely from typhoid fever while nursing one of her brothers.  The monument designed by John Mossman was erected in 1842, nearly sixty years after her death.
