St. Mark ink drawing, circa 1765-1819

Permanent ID:
4972
Date:
1765 – 1819
Image Description:
This sketch was executed in pen with light washes in sepia and blue. West depicts St. Mark seated at the center of the composition holding a book and gazing in thought toward the viewer. A lion rests at St. Mark's feet to the right of the composition. This drawing follows the traditional Christian iconography wherein St. Mark is holding his gospel and is accompanied by a lion. This drawing is undated, but it is similar in form to the works "St. Luke" and "St. Matthew" which both are dated 1785, and is likely from the same time.

This drawing is one of a small collection of drawings created by American-born artist Benjamin West (1738-1820) during his career in London (circa 1765-1819).

296 St. Mark, 8in. by 8in., light blue and sepia, wash and pen, mounted, 21/-   s.b.

Unklike the others of the evangelist series in the look of laboured thought upon the face, instead of ecstatic inspiration ; a lion couchant at his feet, together with the heaviness of his own attitude, combines wonderfully to produce an impression distinctly in keeping with the known character of the subject.
