This drawing is an early study for the painting "The Angels appearing to the Shepherds," which Benjamin West completed in 1774. The drawing is a sepia wash with ink outlines. It depicts two angels holding sheet music standing atop clouds surrounded by cherubs. Below the clouds is a pastoral scene with sheep grazing. A colored, oil study for the final painting and a brief history of the painting can be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This drawing is one of a small collection of drawings created by American-born artist Benjamin West (1738-1820) during his career in London (circa 1765-circa 1819).
