St. Matthew ink drawing, 1785

Permanent ID:
4985
Date:
circa 1785
Image Description:
Labeled St. Matthew, the title that Benjamin West gave this drawing on the back side was likely confused with another evangelist drawing, that of St. John the Evangelist. This drawing depicts St. John with a scroll in his hand, looking upward and riding the back of an eagle. According to traditional Christian iconography, St. John is depicted with an eagle and is usually young.

This drawing is one of a small collection of drawings created by American-born artist Benjamin West (1738-1820) during his career in London (circa 1765-circa 1819).
