Image: 1/9 plate; On ruby glass; Seated young man wearing apron, holding tools of trade, with color applied to his cheeks. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Nonpariel with ornate matte finish (late 1850s onward). Case: Paper-covered wood-frame with floral design, with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a geometric design (1850-1860s).
