Image Description:
Image: 1/6 plate; Woman seated in posing chair wearing a black dress, buttoned at the front, with wide sleeves, and wide black lace running below her shoulders and across the chest, the neckline is low and close, with a small white collar, her hair parted in the centre, smoothed over the head, curled over the ears, with collar-length ringlets at the back, and color applied to her cheeks. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Nonpariel with ornate matte finish (late 1850s onward). Case: Paper-covered wood-frame embossed with a geometric design both front and back, and a gilded pattern edging both the exterior and interior, with a red velvet pinchpad, and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (1850-1860s)
