Image Description:
Image: 1/6 plate; Dark-haired seated man resting arm on a cloth-covered posing table adorned with a book, dressed in dark high-waisted trousers, a dark unbuttoned vest, a white shirt with sleeves rolled up to the elbows and collar turned down, wearing a shiny top hat with a wide dark band and a narrow brim, color applied to his hair and cheeks. Preserver: Straight and embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Nonpariel with matte finish (mid 1840s to mid 1850s). Case: Paper-covered wood-frame embossed with a floral design both front and back, with a royal blue velvet pinchpad and a royal blue velvet cushion embossed with a geometric design (1850-60s).

(ink on paper): This J. J. Neff / my great - great / grandfather, who / became a butcher / with establishment / on Spring Garden St. / A young man here, / having a bit of fun / at photographer's (Enclosed note)
