Image: 1/6 plate; Seated man and woman, color applied to their cheeks; man with one leg crossed over the other and one hand resting on the woman's shoulder, hair parted on one side and puffed at the forehead, wearing a dark jacket with a high back collar, a dark vest, mid-tone pants, and white shirt with a large turned down collar; woman with hair parted in the center with wide dark ribbons hanging down the back, wearing a pattern printed fabric dress with matching patterned shawl or bretelles over her shoulders and crossed over the stomach, with a wide flat white collar that does not meet at the front, a thin dark neck ribbon crossed at the throat with a small brooch, white undersleeves, a watch cord or chain around her neck, and dark netted silk mitts on her hands, and rings on her fingers. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Nonpariel with ornate matte finish (late 1850s onward). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a geometric design both front and back, with a gilded edge trim both exterior and interior, with a red velvet pinchpad, and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (ca. 1850).
