Image: 1/6 plate on purple ruby glass; Head and shoulders of a man with hair parted on one side, wearing a dark jacket with collar rising high at the back of the neck, a dark vest, and a white shirt, with an elaborate dark bow tie, collar turned down, color applied to his cheeks. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Oval with matte finish and ornate (late 1850s). Case: Unmatched halves; paper covered wood frame front embossed with a geometric design, with a red velvet cushion embossed with a flower and basket design (1850s); leather covered wood frame back embossed with a geometric design, with a gilded interior edge trim, and a red velvet pinchpad (ca. 1850).
