Image Description:
Image: 1/9 plate; Head and shoulders of a man with hair parted on one side and partially covering the ears, with a full beard and mustache, wearing a dark jacket with a high back collar, a dark vest, white shirt with upturned collar, and a dark bow tie. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Oval with matte finish and ornate (late 1850s). Case: Thermoplastic with a common geometric design (Berg No. 3-294), with an emerald green velvet pinchpad and cushion embossed with floral design (ca. 1857).
Inscription:
(typed on paper): 8 / April 12, 1858 (on back of ambrotype) daguerreotype most likely by WILLARD, / MARKET St., AB 16th, Philada, possibly of Algernon Sidney Roberts, Jr. [1827 / - 1905], enclosed in a Bakelite-type casement (Enclosed note)
