Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Smith to an unknown correspondent.  A merchant from Baltimore, Smith was a major-general of the Maryland militia in the American Revolution and War of 1812 and later a member of the United States House and Senate.  This letter, dated November 11, 1777, was written from Fort Mifflin, which was the site of a battle between the Continental forces and British forces under the command of Admiral Howe.
