Biography:
The Meridian Mercury was a paper published in Meridian, Mississippi by Colonel Alexander Grice Horn. He began the Mississippi Star in 1836, another eastern Mississippi paper, before founding the Mercury. Horn was the editor and primary writer for the paper, and was a staunch Democrat, unwaveringly supportive of the Confederate cause during the Civil War. Horn also allegedly had ties to the Ku Klux Klan, and was arrested on charges of riot, riotous homicide, and arson during the 1871 Meridian race riots, although he was never indicted or charged.
Horn did not allow the financial department to have any bearing on editorial content of the Mercury, and when he died in 1886, the paper followed, apparently unable to become sustainable.
