What services are available from the Digital Services Department?

We provide the following services:

New digital images of HSP material as requested

Copies of existing digital images in the Digital Library

Permission to reproduce, publish, exhibit, or distribute materials

Digital reproductions are available for purchase as lower-resolution PDFs and high-resolution TIFF files.

Please note that possession of a digital reproduction of HSP’s collection materials does not constitute permission to publish or exhibit the image. Usage rights fees may apply and vary depending on whether a reproduction is for a non-profit or commercial institution and how it will be used.

How do I make a digital reproduction or usage request?

HSP has implemented a ticketing system to manage customer inquiries and requests. This system will allow HSP to better serve its customers, creating efficiencies we hope will lead to quicker turn-around times.

Do licensing restrictions apply to HSP images?

Yes. The collection materials made available in the Digital Library have been determined, to best of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s knowledge, to be of minimal copyright risk, and may be used for educational or research purposes under the Fair Use doctrine. Please note, however, that possession of a digital reproduction of HSP’s collection materials does not constitute permission to publish or exhibit the image. Usage rights fees may apply to reproduced material; please contact Rights and Reproduction for any question regarding the publication or exhibition of an image for commercial or non-profit use.

What benefits are available to HSP Members?

HSP Friends are entitled to discounts on rights and reproductions services. Please consult the details of our membership benefits and let us know about your membership when requesting rights and reproduction services.
