Image Description:
Columbia holds a banner and a sword and is wearing Roman armor.  She has a belt with the label "woman suffrage."  In her right hand, she raises the sword of justice and holds a banner with the inscription:  "33 Penna. counties carried.  315,000 men in state vote for suffrage."  Below her are the sword of "crooked politics" and a broken rifle of "class rule."
                On November of 1915, the referendum for a suffrage amendment to the Pennsylvania constitution was defeated.  Despite carrying 33 Pennsylvania counties and received over 300,000 votes in favor of suffrage, the referendum failed.  Similar amendments also failed in New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts.  When the US Congress approved the constitutional amendment for women's suffrage on June 4, 1919, Pennsylvania became the eighth State to ratify it.  In August 1920, the president signed the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote.
