This drawing is a study for the painting "Chryseis returned to her father Chryse" finished in circa 1771. The scene is from Homer's Illiad. It depicts the Trojan woman Chryseis being returned to her father, Chryse, after being kidnapped by Agamemnon. The finished painting is located at the Luce Center of the New York Historical Society.

This drawing is one of a small collection of drawings created by American-born artist Benjamin West (1738-1820) during his career in London (circa 1765-1819).

A study of the unfinished type so long as expression goes. Bowed with age the father embraces his daughter while attending to the message of the soldier with whom she has been accompanied.
