Permanent ID:

Language:
English
Date:
October 17 1907
Image Description:
Theodore Roosevelt decided not to seek re-election in 1908 and persuaded the Republicans to nominate his friend and Secretary of War, William Taft, for the presidency. Charles Fairbanks, Joseph Cannon, Philander Knox, and Joseph Foraker all sought their party's nomination, but lost it to Taft. In the image, Roosevelt is driving Taft to the White House. The cartoonist pokes fun at Taft's large size and depicts Taft as blocking the road with his large body so that the other candidates cannot pass him.
