Built by Capt. William Dawson, Merchant. Matthew Pratt Esqr. Artist after his return from studying under Benjamin West in England had his studio here in 1768. He was the father of Henry Pratt Esq. Merchant, owner of Pratts Garden Lemon Hill, Fairmount Park. Matthew Pratt died in 1805. In 1795 Captain Dawson lived here, In 1801 it was the residence of Commodore Wm. Bainbridge, and in 1848 the second story front room was the studio of Thomas Birch Esqr. Marine Artist. Sketched by D.J.Kennedy.
