Image Description:
Image: 1/6 plate; Woman seated with arm resting on a book set on a posing table, with hair parted in the center and smoothed against her head, wearing a black silk dress with a wide white-work collar and a brooch at the throat, long widened bell sleeves, and very full flared white undersleeves, a wide patterned ribbon spreading along the skirt, descending from the waist, with color applied to cheeks and lips.
Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s).
Mat: Oval with matte finish and ornate (late 1850s).
Case: Paper-covered wood-frame embossed with a geometric design both front and back, with gilded pattern trim on interior, red velvet pinchpad and red velvet cushion embossed with floral design (1850-60s).
