Image: 1/6 plate on purple ruby glass; Seated young woman, with arm resting on a posing table, holding a child on her lap; Woman with hair parted in the center and smoothed down over her head, wearing a dark dress with buttons down the front, with long belled sleeves, and matching light with dark trim undersleeves and collar, a ring on her finger; Child, fair hair parted in the center with loose waves falling down by the ears, wearing a short-sleeved shoulder baring white dress cinched at the waist, and adorned with white ribbons; color applied to both their cheeks. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Nonpariel with matte finish (mid 1840s to mid 1850s). Case: Leather-covered wood frame embossed with a lyre design on the front and a floral design on the back, with a gilded edge trim on the back interior, a red velvet pinchpad, and a purple silk cushion (1840s).
