Biography:
Joseph Foraker was an influential Republican politician and governor.  He was born on July 5, 1846 in Ohio.  After fighting in Union Army during the Civil War, he enrolled in the Salem Academy at Wesleyan University.  He later attended Cornell Law School and graduated in 1869.  He served as a judge of the superior court in Cincinnati from 1879 to 1882.  He became governor of Ohio in 1885 and served two terms.  He later served in the United States Senate.  In 1908 he sought the Republican party nomination for President, but lost to Taft.  That same year news that Foraker had accepted money from the Standard Oil Company was made public.  Foraker’s political career ended and he lost his bid for a third term in the Senate.  He died on May 10, 1917 in Ohio.
