Biography:
Carl Schurz was a journalist and politician.

Schurz was born in Liblar, Germany on March 2, 1829.  After taking part in the failed revolution of 1848, he was forced to leave his homeland in order to escape imprisonment.  He immigrated to the United States in 1852 and practiced law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  During the Civil War, he fought in the Union Army.  In 1866, he became editor of the Detroit Post, as well as, a German language newspaper.  He served in the United States Senate from 1869 to 1875.  In 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him Secretary of the Interior.  He served until 1881.  Schurz was editor of the New York Evening Post (1881-1884) and President of the National Civil Service Reform League (1892-1901).  He died on May 14, 1906.
