Biography:
Harper & Brothers was a publishing house founded as J.J. Harper in 1817. In 1833, the company changed its name to Harper & Brothers, to Harper & Row in 1962, and HarperCollins in 1990. Harper & Brothers was headquartered on Pearl Street in Manhattan, New York, and began publishing Harper’s New Monthly Magazine in 1850. The company gradually added more publications, beginning with Harper’s Weekly in 1857, then Harper’s Bazar in 1867, and Harper’s Young People in 1879. Throughout its period of expanding periodical publication, Harper & Brothers continued to publish books.
In 1899, George B.M. Harvey became president of Harper & Brothers. William Randolph Hearst bought Harper’s Bazaar in 1913.
