Image Description:
Item is a pamphlet by James Smith Counsellor at Law on the twin matters of  Christian morality and emancipation as it relates to American slavery.  It was written in response to a series of letters between the Reverend Richard Fuller and Dr. Francis Wayland (spelled Wyland in the text).  Smith concludes that while slavery is at odds with Christian morality, neither "slave nor master are prepared for immediate emancipation," advocating instead for a program of education paired with gradual emancipation.
