Image Description:
1687 map by Thomas Holme of the Province of Pennsilvania [Pennsylvania] Containing the Three Countyes [Counties] of Chester, Philadelphia, and Bucks, divided across three separate plates.  In 1682, William Penn appointed Holme surveyor-general of Pennsylvania and charged him with the task of laying out the "greene country towne" that Penn envisioned along the Delaware River.  Holme imposed an orderly grid plan on the site, which would become the city of Philadelphia.  As the colony developed, Penn requested that Holme make several more maps showing the progress of settlement and land ownership in the colony.  Penn subsequently had several of these maps printed and engraved in London, hoping they would entice more settlers to Pennsylvania.
