Image Description:
Various photographs of spectators at Shibe Park (1) and (2) are recto and verso of "Yowee! That anticipated postwar sports boom isn't in the offing-it's here. As evidence here's a view of Shibe Park, overflowing with 37,472 fans who welcmed the return of peacetime major league ball yesterday. It was a record throng for opening day here but the Athletics took the gloss of the occasion by losing to the New York Yankees, 5-0. (3) and (4) are recto and verso of "packed like so many sardines are these cash customers in the lower grandstand behind first base at Shibe Park. In all, some 25,000 fans turned out yesterday as our A's battled the Yankees at the local park." (5) and (6) are recto and verso of "here's proof there were plenty of cash customers at Shibe Park yesterday as the Phils and Cards battled through two thrilling games. The paid attendance was 30,823, and there must have been a couple more thousand 'on the cuff' fans, because the place was jammed."
