Image Description:
Various photographs related to the Carl Mackley Houses, also known as Juniata Park Housing, in Philadelphia. Built in 1933-1934, these single-family apartments were financed by the Housing Division of the Public Works Administration and spanned an entire city block bounded by Castor Avenue, Bristol, M, and Cayuga Streets. The Carl Mackley Houses were sponsored by the American Federation of Full-Fashioned Hosiery Workers and named for a striking hosiery worker killed by non-union workers during the H.C. Aberle Company strike in 1930.

(1) is a photograph of several Depression-era murals commemorating Carl Mackley and hosiery workers; (2) are two photographs of young residents of the Carl Mackley houses at the complex's pool and daycare center dated April 6, 1935; (3) is an aerial photograph of the entire four-building complex dated March 4, 1940; (4) is a view of a pool at Carl Mackley Houses undated but captioned with the following on the verso, "Sixty thousand visitors have seen these modern homes. The new Carl Mackley Houses, $1,039,000 Public Works Administration housing development in Philadelphia have drawn visitors from almost every state and a half dozen foreign countries. They provide 284 apartments at rentals within the means of low income families."

Top mural panel reads: “I hereby solemnly promise: That I will continue the struggle against low wages, poverty and oppression, and that I will not falter nor be intimidated by hired assassins nor discouraged by subservient and ofttimes tyrannical judiciary: “That if necessary, I too will lay down My life in order that all those who toil may be delivered from industrial enslavement by the unamerican and avaricious industrial despots. “To all of wich I, at the bier of our martyred brother, Carl Mackley, Do pledge my most sacred word of honor.”
