Letter from Henry Baring Powel to his father, John Hare Powel, telling of a series of slanderous newspaper articles that were written about him in the Portland Oregonian. However, Baring writes in the middle of the letter that the editor who had previously embellished accounts given to him about Baring had in fact cleared his name, and accepted blame for the misinformation presented.
Baring had been banished to the small Oregon town Astoria in 1850 by his father, after Baring left his wife and small child and acquired serious debt.
