This book of nursery rhymes and short stories was wirtten by Ann Preston under the pseudonym, "Cousin Ann." Preston [1813-1872] was a doctor, abolitionist, women's rights and temperance advocate, schoolteacher, and first women dean of the the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. This book contains the following stories and rhymes: Mary May [corresponding frontispeice illustration by "J SPITALL"], The Birds, Willy Way, Charles Clear, Howard and His Squirrel [includes illustration by "J SPITTAL"], Tom and Lucy, Johnny Vanline, Basil Brown, Henry Box Brown [includes unsigned illustration, likely made by "J SPITALL"], Lola Lake and Lila Lee, I'll Never Use Tobacco, The Chestnut Hunt, and The Evening Hymn Little Alice Sings.
