Date:

Image Description:
Second 1851 issue of "The Fair," a miniature, hand-written juvenile magazine by John G. or James G. Whiteman, about the Franklin Institute's Exhibition of American Manufacturers. The exhibition was an annual display of new American inventions and goods. This issue, about the 21st annual exhibition, shows a more mature Whiteman's illustrations, some highly detailed and impressively small. It also includes a small pen and ink drawing of a colorful bird on an unbound circular piece of paper, which was likely drawn with India inks sold at the fair. The second to last page of the magazine shows a tiny woodcut engraving of a dog, meant to me a miniature reproduction of one found at the exhibition.
Items discussed and illustrated in this issue include: friction matches, "hanging paper," carved picture frames, ornamental furniture, woodcut prints.

The small magazine is held together with a straight pin.
