This drawing is more finished than others in the collection, with a detailed wash that adds value and drama.This drawing is one of a small collection of drawings created by American-born artist Benjamin West (1738-1820) during his career in London (circa 1765-circa 1819).

The figure is three-quarter length, admirably draped ; the head surrounded by a nimbus, the hands bound ; at either side above the shoulders appear the points of spears ; the face expressive of joy mixed with compassion.
