This folder contains former volume 5, pages 61 to 118 of the extra illustrated version of John Galt's The Life, Studies and Works of Benjamin West. It contains letters to and from West concerning the Royal Academy of Arts of which West was the President, a letter to Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin, concerning the coronation of King George IV, personal correspondences, and prints of notable contemporaries and historical figures. Oversize pages are in box 3, folder 6.Two correspondences, one dated from 1808, discuss West's plan to finish the West Window of St. George's Chapel, the last commission that West received from King George III that ultimately remained unfinished.
John Galt wrote two volumes covering the life of Benjamin West. The first was published in 1816 and contains biographical information from West’s birth to his travels in Italy in the 1760s. The second volume contains West’s move to London and his subsequent career as historical painter to King George III, and ends with West’s death in 1820.
