This letter was written by Phillis Wheatley, the first published African-American female poet, to abolitionist and congregational Reverend Samuel Hopkinson (1721–1803). In the letter she mentioned that she sent 17 copies of her book to Hopkins and two to her friend Obour Tanner, a servant to the Tanner family of Newport, Rhode Island, and one to "Mr. Mason." She also mentions reading about two free African-American men missionizing in Africa.
