Image Description:
A portrait of Strickland Kneass (1821-1884) from the second of two photographic portrait albums assembled by W. Curtis Taylor & Company for the Centennial Exhibition. Kneass was a United States civil engineer.  His most notable work is the 1866 cast iron Chestnut Street Bridge in Philadelphia.  From 1855 until 1872, he was chief engineer and surveyor of the consolidated city of Philadelphia.  In 1872, he became assistant to the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad.  He later became president of the Pennsylvania and Delaware and other railroads.
