Portrait of James Skinner, from the Philadelphia Record Photograph Morgue [V07].  Skinner was a native Philadelphian and was a graduate of Central High School.  After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1911, he took a $75 per month job with the Philadelphia Storage Battery Company.  By 1917 he was its vice president and then was named president in 1931.  He also served briefly as chairman of the board (1939-1940).  During the war Skinner resigned from his business responsibilities, and worked as a full-time volunteer on behalf of the soldiers and other military personnel.  His experience in business led to him being appointed head of the industries department of the annual war chest campaigns.
