Image Description:
A small leather box with 381 accompanying cards [randomly organized], each containing a message from the Bible, followed by a verse of four lines by Gerhard Tersteegen [1697-1769]. These cards were printed by Christoph Sauer, Sr. the first German printer in America whose shop was located in Germantown [now part of Philadelphia]. Sauer, like Tersteegen, was a radical Pietist and these cards were used for some sort of spiritual edification, mostly likely in the form of bibliomancy.
