The old packet ship "Tonawanda" once the pride of Cope's Black Cross Line; Capt. Theo. Julius sailed from Walnut St. wharf, Sept. 30th 1862 with a full cargo and 200 passengers, towed by the tug America which in later years became famous as the "Polaris" that went to the Arctic Regions, on Friday Oct 9th. She was captured by the pirate Alabama, the Capt. gave a bond for $80.00 and was released. She grew old, had changed owners and masters until 1887, when she was dismantled, and when the dreadful storm of Sept. 10th 1889 occurred she went down in Delaware Bay as a coal barge, past which she had so often sailed a proud green of the seas.
